We can all learn something from speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, who showed why he is a true champion Friday night. Ohno lost in the 500 meter short track after being disqualified for bumping a fellow skater. It had to be a terrible blow to the iconic hero of the sport.
Later, however, he brushed off defeat as Read the rest of this entry »

I’m afraid what’s missing in the national dialogue about Tiger Woods is our collective double standard when it comes to fidelity and integrity. There are many of us who were appalled by Tiger’s actions. We still believe that marriage is a total commitment and that being unfaithful to one’s spouse is never an option.
But make no mistake, there are many others who feel the only thing wrong about Tiger’s philandering is Read the rest of this entry »

This may change your whole outlook on business, and consequently make you more profitable. If so, please keep me in mind with an appropriate commission (just kidding, kinda).
You love your customer, right? Everyone says so, and probably believes it’s true. But, in the weary winter of slow sales and sagging profits, the customer actually gets forgotten. We get more focussed on the costs and the staffing levels and the inventory concerns. Almost without noticing it, the customer is an afterthought.
Here are some ways to know if it’s true in your business. Read the rest of this entry »

Wouldn’t it be nice if your company or organization were composed of the very best talent out there? We all want that team of all-stars to overwhelm the competition.
That’s probably not your reality. However, your team can still be “great” in its own unique way. In fact, former UCLA coach John Wooden explores the concept of “personal greatness” in his book Wooden on Leadership. Even the guy on the bench has a role to play, and can be “great.” In fact, it’s absolutely essential.

Be the Positive Image You Want Others to See
If you followed the Super Bowl, you know that the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts in a gutsy performance Sunday. Drew Breeze got the MVP award, but the real hero may well be the head coach, Sean Payton. Read the rest of this entry »

My absence from this page has been somewhat intentional as a result of a fairly new profession. I joined the Kirk Dillard campaign for Illinois Governor as Communications Director in late September. Dillard is an Illinois Republican State Senator, running in the February 2 Illinois Primary.
He’s got a great chance of winning and going on to defeat the Democratic nominee in November.
Anyway, I decided I needed to devote the bulk of my energies to this new mission, and as a result I had little time left for my own web site or blog. Going forward, I will be posting reflections and updates from the campaign from time to time, but will still be offering the insights on leadership and communication as I did in the past.
Bottom line, if you live in Illinois — Kirk Dillard is your choice for Governor. Get more information at his web site: dillardforgovernor.com.

I’m amazed at the very real effect vigorous exercise has on my body. There truly is a “runner’s high,” when endorphins kick in after you’ve put in a hard workout.
The same thing happens in the psychological world. I call it the “winner’s high,” because Read the rest of this entry »

Most of us can easily remember the pain, fear and anger we experienced on September 11, 2001. As a reporter, I’ve never felt the kind of wrenching emotion I had that day as I tried to cover the reaction among Chicagoans.
My good friend Steve Bertrand, news anchor on WGN Radio in Chicago, made the point on the air today that unless you lived through it, you can’t really grasp the full impact of the terrorist attacks. It’s just another date in history. Read the rest of this entry »
